Social Skills
Is there a child in your life who is always in trouble at school, lacks the confidence to develop peer relationships or is always refusing to comply with simple requests? This child may need help learning and developing their social skills in order to move forward in their ever changing world.

What is the importance of Social Skills?
Social skills are those communication, problem-solving, decision making, self-management, and peer relations abilities that allow one to develop and maintain positive social relationships with others.

Social Skills are the foundation for getting along with others. A lack of Social Skills can lead to behavioral difficulties in school, delinquency, inattentiveness, peer rejection, emotional difficulties, aggressiveness, problems with interpersonal relationships, poor self-concept, academic failures, bullying, concentration difficulties, isolation from peers, and depression.

Good social skills are linked to peer acceptance, adult acceptance, inclusion success and post school achievement. Therefore, learning and developing social competence during childhood is an important step in healthy development.

What is Social Skills Training?
“Social skills training" is a general term for educating children in (behavioral) areas. Learning these skills promote more productive/positive interaction with others and increase the chances of improved academic performance and positive self-esteem.
Social Skills training targets attention issues, listening skills, organizational skills, positive interactions with peers (taking turns, sharing, being kind to one another, team work, good sportsmanship, etc.). Additionally, groups will learn communication skills; talking to and listening to others with validation and supporting responses. Discussions and activities are focused around the importance of accepting of authority, interacting positively with peers, accepting limits imposed by adults, and taking responsibility for one’s behavior.

Harmony Counseling Services will be providing social skills training to assist children with learning and developing these important life skills. Groups are forming based on grade levels.

Groups will be formed in the following manner:

Grades 1-3
Grades 4-5
Grades 6-8
Grades 9-12

All groups will start when there are three members in the group.
